Job Description

As the Lead Pricing & Ordering Specialist, you will build the mathematical backbone of our trading and inventory strategies. This role goes beyond reporting — you will develop manual formulas and advanced models to predict market shifts, price volatility, and demand for higher education textbooks.

You will serve as the “Mathematical Engine,” bridging leadership, operations, and the Data Engineering team to ensure purchasing and sales strategies are driven by rigorous statistical proof rather than intuition.

You will also provide technical leadership in quantitative decision-making, set analytical standards, guide stakeholders in interpreting models, and mentor analysts contributing to pricing, ordering, and data-driven initiatives. In addition, you will ensure our analytics can support scalable and integrated growth ideas, including phygital bundles, B2B channels, and demand intelligence initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mathematical Modelling: Define, validate, and govern the quantitative formulas used to determine buy/sell spreads, order quantities, and capital deployment timing, ensuring they are consistently applied across the business.
  • Advanced Forecasting: Set the forecasting methodology and standards used to predict textbook lifecycle and demand, ensuring purchasing volume decisions across academic seasons are driven by statistically sound assumptions.
  • Data Architecture Partnership: Provide technical direction to the Data Team on data aggregation requirements, ensuring data pipelines support advanced quantitative analysis for pricing and ordering decisions.
  • Assumption Testing: Own the stress‑testing framework for purchasing exposure and inventory risk, defining scenarios and assumptions used to evaluate market shifts and structural changes.
  • Optimization: Define the optimization logic and metrics (e.g., weighted average cost of inventory, turnover targets, ordering cycles) used to maximize ROI across academic seasons.
  • Quantitative Leadership: Act as the internal authority on pricing and ordering analytics, governing how quantitative insights are interpreted and applied in leadership and operational decision‑making.
  • Cross-Functional Influence: Guide and influence operations, pricing, and data teams to ensure analytical insights are embedded into decision‑making processes and operational workflows, including translating viable ideas from internal initiatives or pilot programs into pricing and ordering decision frameworks where appropriate.
  • Mentorship and Capability Building: Provide guidance and mentorship to analysts or junior team members contributing to pricing, forecasting, and ordering analysis, helping elevate the overall analytical capability of the organization.

Requirements

  • Advanced Academic Background: Master’s in Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, or Physics.
  • Experience:
  • 5–7 years of experience in quantitative modeling, pricing strategy, capital allocation, purchasing optimization, or a related analytical field.
  • Experience acting as a technical lead or principal contributor, setting analytical direction and decision frameworks that others execute against in pricing, ordering, or inventory‑driven environments.
  • Statistical Mastery: Deep expertise in probability theory, regression analysis, and predictive modeling.
  • The "Manual" Edge: While you know how to code, you possess the ability to derive formulas manually and explain the "why" behind the numbers to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Data Savvy: Experience working with large datasets and a strong understanding of how data must be structured for high-level analysis (SQL proficiency is a plus).
  • Business Acumen: The ability to translate a formula like P(t)=P0 e−αt into a clear ordering or purchasing recommendation — including when to accumulate stock, hold positions, or liquidate inventory.
  • Leadership & Communication: Strong ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders, communicate complex quantitative insights clearly, and guide analytical decision-making across teams.
