Job Description
We are looking for a front-end developer with extensive experience in developing websites on Content Management Systems. The candidate should ideally have experience developing on WordPress or other PHP-based CMS. Experience with Shopify is a bonus.
The candidate will require advanced skills in HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. The front-end developer’s role is to convert high-fidelity designs produced by our designers into fully functioning websites, taking into account the technical scope and requirements of each project. A solid understanding of UX and UI design principles is required.
Building the front end of a website is a meticulous process. The developer needs to create websites that are easy to use, well-structured, and reliable. This role requires an analytical eye for detail to ensure high-quality output and to minimise errors.
Responsibilities include:
- Implementing website designs using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Programming, adjusting, and creating all visual aspects of a website
- Enhancing user interface (UI) and overall usability
- Considering search engine optimisation (SEO) best practices
- Creating tools to improve user experience (UX) across browsers
- Ensuring websites function correctly across different browsers
- Considering all screen sizes (mobile, tablet, desktop)
- Organising UI with releases, including planning, testing, and change management
- Linking images and text for easy navigation
- Adjusting websites to suit their target market
- Creating front-end code that integrates with back-end systems
- Communicating with colleagues regarding decisions and progress
- Maintaining software management and web application UIs
- Providing recommendations for UI enhancements and improvements
- Testing, debugging, and maintaining usability
- Using version control systems to track code changes
Requirements
Required Skills & Experience:
- Advanced HTML5 and CSS3 (SASS / LESS), and JavaScript (jQuery and native ECMAScript 2018+)
- Proven experience developing with CMS platforms such as WordPress, Shopify, or Magento
- Strong knowledge of PHP or Liquid (desirable)
- Familiarity with CSS methodologies such as BEM
- Experience working with CSS frameworks such as Bootstrap
- Working knowledge of web design and development tools (Adobe Creative Cloud, Visual Studio)
- Experience developing responsive websites for mobile devices
- Experience using Git for version control
- Experience with automated task runners and bundlers (Gulp, Grunt, Webpack, or GUI tools such as Prepros or CodeKit)
- Comfortable working with command-line tools (Node.js, Shopify Theme Kit, etc.)
- Ability to translate creative concepts and design templates into flexible, responsive code
- Excellent understanding of website usability, accessibility, security, and information architecture
- Ability to work as part of a team and manage workflow under pressure
- High attention to detail with the ability to produce organised, tidy, and well-documented code
- Strong understanding of UI/UX principles with a meticulous eye for detail
- Ability to develop websites that are cross-browser and cross-platform compatible
- Experience using browser developer tools
- Experience in front-end debugging
- Ability to quote, plan, schedule, and report on projects
- Ability to work closely with back-end developers
Additional Requirements & Information:
- Min. 5 years of professional front-end development experience (or equivalent demonstrated senior-level capability).
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision; this role is intended for experienced, self-sufficient developers
- Professional English proficiency (written and spoken) is required, as this role involves communication with Australian and international stakeholders
- Portfolio required. Candidates must submit links to 2–3 live production websites they have worked on and clearly describe their role and responsibilities in each project. Applications without a portfolio will not be considered.
- 100% remote position (location listed for administrative purposes only)

This role is engaged on an independent contractor basis.
